Hilarious Summer Read,May 15, 2007

I was so excited to see that Cynthia Kaplan had come out with a second book of essays. It was well worth the wait. Many passages were so hilarious that I found myself having to put the book down, finish laughing, and then re-read them. Kaplan updates her life since “Why I’m Like This”, her incredible first book, but also delves into bigger societal issues such as God and religious extremism with deft humor and insight. This is a great summer read.

I bought this book because I had read the author’s first book, “Why I’m Like
This.” I’d loved that book, so to be honest, I wasn’t sure her second book could measure up. I was not expecting much. But this book surpassed the first. It’s funny without losing depth, smart but not cocky, and allows the reader to take a delicious peak into her life as a mother, wife, sister, actress, and writer. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great read.

Like listening to a friend,May 22, 2007

I loved Kaplan’s first book, so when I saw this one on the front table at Borders, I bought it immediately. Kaplan is smart, sarcastic, neurotic, and ironic, but never mean-spirited; in fact her love for her parents, her brother, her in-laws, her husband, and her kids comes through clearly, even when she admits that she doesn’t want to vacation with them!
Reading Kaplan’s stories feels like a conversation with a good friend, but one who is honest and brave enough to say out loud what she’s really thinking, and in the process makes you laugh so hard that your stomach hurts.

I read many titles steeped in humor but this just failed to impress me. I didn’t get very far into it before I made my decision to discontinue my time with it. I’ve never read Kaplan before and doubt I will again. She attempts to write in a self-deprecating manner like other humor authors, but for me, it failed to have the same effect. I just didn’t think she was that likable. Her stories failed to capture my interest. There were a few notable points, but they didn’t arouse laughter in me as I was expecting.
I suppose if you’re in the mood for a few stories from a mostly negative-minded Mother, then this book is for you.

I hope Cynthia Kaplan is writing another book,February 26, 2006

When I was about three essays into reading WHY I’M LIKE THIS, I logged on to Amazon.com to see if I could order something else that Cynthia Kaplan had written. I was enjoying WHY I’M LIKE THIS that much. I was surprised to find so many negative or lukewarm reviews about the book at that time. As I continued to read the book, I kept waiting for the essay collection to go downhill, as the reviews had led me to believe it would, but that never happened. The essays in the collection were all winners, in my opinion.

So why was I so dazzled by this little-talked-about book? I was impressed by Kaplan’s hilarious style and her ability — and willingness — to put herself and her family under the microscope in order to make some very honest observations about life. When she puts motherhood under the microscope, she is particularly frank. I found her essays on this subject to be some of the most honest and perceptive I’ve come across anywhere.

I highly recommend this collection of essays to anyone who enjoys reading writing that is genuinely funny, entertaining, and honest — as opposed to writing that seeks to impress with its cleverness. I hope this is simply the first of many books to come from this perceptive and entertaining author.

Enjoy the dysfunction, presented in a lighter tone,October 17, 2005

If you enjoy essays commenting on life’s absurdities to provoke a laugh, this book is for you. The shining star of the book was Kaplan’s tale of how her therapist became completely unhinged, and Kaplan watched the train wreck from the patient’s chair. The reader is also treated to her experiences waitressing in an overpriced bistro, her career playing lesbian characters in several different plays for one director, one long night hopped up on caffeine and 8 Midols, and more. Later chapters focus on life with her small children, which I think will be appreciated the most by other people with children. Overall, this book is a quick read divided up into some great anecdotes, and it comes highly recommended.

Did her parents read this book?,June 23, 2008

Life of a twenty-something in contemporary New York City must be a moveable feast, for there appear to be a plethora of books of non-fiction detailing all of the odd, amusing and not so amusing incidents of that way of life. I found it amazing that the author had so many different roommates, all of them male, and they almost were non-entities in the book. The incidents were chuckle-causing, and even though I’m way beyond the age of the author, I did enjoy the book very much, and perhaps with a bit of envy for a life I never led!

Too good?,May 16, 2008

Perhaps the real Sloane Crosley is a transgendered junkie raised in foster homes by abusive religious fanatics. One never knows these days (and maybe not just these days, if you think of Daniel Defoe faking it). Anyway she writes in the persona of a young, healthy, good-looking heterosexual with Westchester parents, a New England College, and a Manhattan job. These are handicaps for the vendor of comic reminiscences, but Crosley overcomes them nobly, and was able to make me laugh out loud at several points. She makes the most of the childhood traumata of having an unusual name and being assigned the second best bedroom. Would Augusten Burroughs have managed as well with such scant material? He had it made.
I was about to conclude with commiserating her for the fact that humor is a tough competitive market, and that even the most brilliant satire ends up on the reminder tables if it ever makes print, but I see that she’s in the Amazon top one hundred bestseller list. No theodicy is needed.

My new favorite author,April 19, 2008

I Was Told There’d Be Cake is a series of essays by sometimes-contributor to the Village Voice Sloane Crosley. There are fifteen essays total, and they cover typical twenty-something subjects, such as moving into a new walkup apartment in New York City (not as easy as it would appear), attending the wedding of every girl you knew in high school that you’d forgotten about (been there, done that), a semidysfunctional family (her family IS my family), and a satanic first boss.

Sloane Crosley tells these stories with humor and insight and she has a truly unique voice. But there were also times where I found myself thinking, “I think the same way!” Or, “I wish I’d thought of that!” It’s a completely honest, open kind of storytelling, one that you don’t see in many writers of today. Being a twenty-something myself, I could completely empathize with this book–made even better if you understand the cultural references (Oregon Trail, anyone?) This book is a complete gem. I’m going to recommend it to every twenty-something I know.

Now here is a woman who has her fingers on the pulse of sexuality… literally! To say this is a book of sharing would be an understatement. Angel also let you in on what she was thinking at the time when these escapades were going on. She is not afraid to laugh at herself and the little world she has created. And in turn, you laugh along with her. This woman probably knows more about men then we know about ourselves and is never short on words there. An easy read and easy laughs, thanks Angel.

Not really impressed,October 10, 2007

After reading other reviews on this book, I was excited to get it and start reading immediately. However, reading this book seemed more like a lecture and less like entertainment. I had a hard time getting into it (never really did) and I barely cracked a smile. Every time I did start getting into the story, grammatical errors would distract me. They weren’t even advanced errors. Proofreading would have done this book wonders, but the addition of a sense of humor would have really made this a book worth reading.

I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE SEQUEL!,May 14, 2005

I just finished reading “My Horizontal Life” and I have to say, it was the most fun I think I’ve ever had reading a book. I was laughing so hard at some of these stories that I was calling people up to quote lines over the phone (I know that’s annoying if you’re on the other end but it had to be done). In fact, when I finished reading it, I picked it back up and read a couple of the stories again.

As a fan of stand-up comedy (the author is a comedienne), I expected the book to be full of jokes and it is, but what I didn’t expect is that it would be so revealing, sweet and engaging. By the last page, I felt like I knew the author as well as some of my closest friends.

Whether or not you yourself have had a one-night stand, you will be able to relate to the things that happen to her. Okay, maybe we haven’t all dated a male stripper who’s “every gay guy’s fantasy” but we’ve all dated someone we sadly discovered is not so bright or who doesn’t have a good grasp of our language. Personally, I think even a nun would find this book amusing. But I wouldn’t buy it for her. I’d hope she’d just stumble upon it on her own.

I’ve read many humor book over the years and the problem with a lot of them is that they’re just not that funny. This one delivers.

It started with my friend calling me, then laughing so hard she could barely read from her copy of the book. I borrowed it. Spent the next few months re-telling hilarious “episodes” from the book. I bought it. Now I bought more copies for friends. This is a complete laugh-out-loud book. Don’t think about it, just read it!

My Kind o’ Gal!!,March 14, 2006

When I finished the first chapter of this book, I ran right out to Barnes & Noble and bought the remaining 6 copies for my girlfriends who would appreciate this absolutely hilarious, honest and totally entertaining memoir. What a gal! So my best friend and I sat side by side at the beach laughing like a couple of hyenas. Our kids were worried about us. The only thing I didn’t like about the book was that it had to end at all. I could have gone on another 700 pages! Chelsea is delightful and so damn funny…I emailed her when I was done and she answered! I hope we are fortunate enough to get a lot more of her blunt, honest humor in the near future. She ROCKS!

One of the funniest people in America,April 16, 2008

I actually bought this book for my wife, since she had enjoyed Chelsea Handler’s previous book, “My Horizontal Life.” When the book arrived yesterday, I picked it up to peruse it and I couldn’t put it down. This book is laugh-out-loud funny. The book contains stories from the author’s life from around the age of 9 through adulthood that are funny from the perspective of men and women alike. As should be clear from the title, this book isn’t for kids and the content can be pretty racy. If you aren’t easily offended, however, it will probably be the most humorous book you read this year. I’d give it more than 5 stars if I could.

All I can say is buy this book!!! I was reading it on my flight home yesterday and was laughing SO hard that people were staring at me…but I couldn’t help it. Chelsea is just that funny! Her writing about her parents is the best. And as a redheaded woman, I agree with her about reheaded men from my own experience. I try to avoid them too. Plus, she’s way funnier than that crazy Manc, Karl Pilkington.

Not Just for the Girls… Funny for both genders!,August 1, 2008

I recently purchased this book on audio (unabridged and it was read by the author) for a long car ride. Wow! Once you get past her dry tone, my husband and I were laughing our butts off. She continually refers to her father as “Bitch Tits” which is a funny visual to keep in your brain while following the stories involving her dad. Of particular humor here was her retelling of her first DUI and going to county lockup… THAT was so hysterical! I think the book would be just as funny, but it was an added bonus to hear her do the storytelling.

I picked up “The Power of Now” in the “New Age” section of the bookstore. I was determined to make the reading about “spirituality” a short episode in my life… and I was probably right, as far as the reading goes, that is.

I got the book and continued reading at home, and, as I often do with study guides and textbooks, started underlining what seemed most important. Soon it became harder to separate the important from the unimportant, because it all seemed important! Then, I stopped, put down the pencil and said: “Wow!”

Where did this book come from? Why aren’t we hearing about it on CNN? Reading it felt strange at first, as it demanded my total attention: either I was drawn deep into it, or not at all. Do you like to eat while reading? Well, this book will make you feel ridiculous if you try to eat and read at the same time!

The book showed me that I have a pretty thick mold of the mind to break through, and it took me very far on the first day, even farther after that. The message went beyond what I would probably recognize on my own. After all, I was (and still am but to a lesser degree) one of those constant thinkers who mistakenly believe that it’s good to think all the time but almost never stop to see, hear and feel the essence of being. Although the message in the book seems familiar and simple, in the end it provided exhaustive answers to the few questions that I had and also those that I wouldn’t have thought of before. Amazingly, it also managed not to raise new ones. What it did was grab me by lapels and put me into the present moment. Over and over again, it told me what it means, how to enter it, offered a few different methods, and suggested that with practice many opportunities exist to enter it.

Another point is that once I finished the book, its message lingered (may I say “in my mind” here?). The author’s obvious and at the same time subtly effective, repetitive approach somehow kept reassuring me that I was absorbing and remembering the material. The text never strayed far from the core of the message, which seemed to stick with vivid clarity.

I soon began to practice shifting myself into this state of intense concentration, and it feels strange and alluring at the same time, this detachment from the mind. At first, I could only do it while being completely relaxed, just before falling asleep. Later, it became easier to do along with other daily activities. Don’t worry; you will not get hit by a truck while crossing the street and trying to focus into the Now! Also, the people at work will not laugh at you because you look weird trying to focus, but they may notice a difference in you: that you are relaxed, focused and less confrontational (because you are surrendered to the present moment). The most immediate effect for me was that focusing into the present moment helped me communicate better. I began to listen more intensely, meaningfully and less judgmentally than before.

However, I feel that this is only the tip of an iceberg. Trying to be in the Now has inspired me more than any miracle. At the same time, it’s clear that learning to live in the Now is a skill, and like any skill it can be enhanced with practice. The more you work at it, the better and more natural you get doing it.

In short, I don’t need to search for the truth anymore. I got lucky on the first try, by becoming a little curious with the book that seemed unassuming and light in physical weight. Thank you, Eckhart. NOW, I can be at peace, knowing how much I can look forward to in this life, and beyond.

The Power of Tolle’s message,June 1, 2000

In the past 25 years I have read spiritual books ranging from the works of Gurdjieff and his followers to the discourses and satsangs with Maharaj, Poonjaji, and Gangaji. These have helped me and probably thousands of other seekers. They were the best written accounts available to all of us on the Path who refused to swallow the sugar pills of superficial knowledge of spirituality and enlightenment offered by many. NOW comes Eckhart Tolle with an unbelievably clear, powerful and succinct account of how and why our mind-based ego consciousness runs us, robs us of our birthright as humans, and why our society, at every turn, supports this process. His message is exquisitely eloquent and direct: Learn, through endless practice (unbending intent as Don Juan would say) to observe your mind without judgement. See where this leads you again and again as your sense of who you are escapes psychological time and the vastness, wholeness, and beauty of Creation opens before you. I have read only the first 50 pages and already I know that it will be THE ONE BOOK that goes with me everywhere as I read and reread it until it is part of me.

Easy to comprehend, hard to live,December 4, 2000

I’ve read this book twice and also saw the author live a few weeks ago in San Francisco. He battled for many years with severe depression, and looked for answers to his life through higher learning before having a complete change of life and finding inner peace and joy through living in the present moment. He encourages the reader to let go of the ego and brain “noise” and be in the now, which is how he says he lives. Most all of the “problems” we have in life don’t directly effect us in the moment, yet we are controlled and tortured by them he says. Tolle also makes the case for healing past pain and suffering through simply being fully here now. Making these changes in our materialistic, image possessed, ego driven society is a challenge indeed, but he would say it’s our only way out. This is truly life changing stuff.

Utterly profound, a book to TRULY change your life.,August 8, 2001

I was attracted to the title of this book, and when I picked it up and read Eckhart Tolle’s first words, a description of waking up in the middle of the night years ago filled with dread and an unnameable fearfulness, I thought: “This is me”. When I returned to the bookstore a few days later to buy it, ALL of their multiple copies were sold, as was another bookstore’s. Three local libraries had it out on loan, with a waiting list to reserve it. This is a book that connects to people. The premise of “The Power of Now” is that, rather than USING our minds, we have grown into a society that is used BY our minds, trapping us in a neverending cycle of repetitive, negative thinking that totally absorbs us out of ourselves and any awareness about the miraculous moment we are in RIGHT NOW. This is not a new concept, and the author is admitedly influenced by the teachings of the Buddha and “A Course in Miracles”. What makes his approach so remarkable (aside from his clear, vital writing style) is a simple question-and-answer format that Tolle has drawn out of years of teaching. Tolle presents probing, often argumentative questions raised by his students, and then answers them with eye-opening truths. The book is also notated throughout for moments to stop reading, put it down, and get a feeling of the message that’s been presented. And it’s these moments NOT reading, but allowing yourself to be conscious of what you’ve read, that really opens the ideas for you. “The Power of Now” is so vastly superior to other books of its kind, it is staggering. While I am currently relaxing my way through a third reading, none of the philosophy of “Now” is in any way promotive of obsession or in conflict with ANY religious or spirtual belief, as a previous reviewer seemed to suggest. I will be buying a LOT of these for holiday presents.

The Truth is in the Power of Now,December 13, 2000

This book is so filled with truth, so powerful, so crystal clear that I was compelled to write this review and share it with other people. THE POWER OF NOW and WORKING ON YOURSELF DOESN’T WORK by Ariel and Shya Kane are the two most powerful and insightful books on self-awareness I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Reading both of these books is like working with Zen masters, compassionate spiritual teachers who can free us from the torture that our minds and our judgments inflict on us constantly. I am not exaggerating when I say that THE POWER OF NOW was like a breath of fresh air. Tolle gets right to the point and explains so much about inner peace and how our minds actually work that I found myself wanting to share what he and the Kanes have discovered. If THE POWER OF NOW is the technical manual for reaching fulfillment (because it is mostly explanations about awareness rather than illustrative examples), then WORKING ON YOURSELF DOESN’T WORK is the practical guide with real world examples and insights that describe exactly how satisfaction is possible in everyday life. You’ll want both of these books. I’ve found what I was looking for thanks to these wonderful authors.

Loved, loved, loved them,March 8, 2007

This was my first taste of Sherrilyn Kenyon and her Dark-Hunter series and now I am waiting with baited breath for my next shipment to get here so I can continue reading her series. I have been an avid Laurell K Hamilton reader and after reading all the current books in both of her series was left desperate and depressed with nothing to read…. THEN I found the Dark-Hunter series!!! I love how each book is devoted to a Dark-Hunter. Getting to know each of them “intimately” and then seeing them make little guest appearances in the next book makes for an awesome read. These are the kind of books you find hard to put down once you start reading. I would recommend this series to anyone who loves the paranormal, adventure, romance-erotica genre. A+, 5 stars, 2 thumbs up!

A Western: A Fistful of Gotham,August 4, 2003

In a phrase, The Dark Knight returns is simply a “western.” The old hero comes out of retirement to save his town one last time. On his way, he meets an assortment of old acquaintances, both friend and foe. At the end, there’s a nice sunset for him to ride off into. Or is there?

Frank Miller’s book is more of a character study of a retired vigilante who just can’t take it anymore. Think “Unforgiven” with tights and thermite. Like Arkham Asylum, this is a story of a man and his obsession. Miller’s text puts us into that moment, and also reveals his doubts about his chosen calling. Batman here is a man divided, the reluctant hero, and he behaves as such. THIS Batman even realizes that his personal moral code may be suspect. (But never for long.) And the fact that he seems to be instrumental in bringing the Joker out of a catatonic state is telling. Do we beget our own demons? The story questions this repeatedly, and leaves it to us.

Fleshed out not only with cameos, but with a new Robin, a new Commissioner, and several other characters, this is a true work of literature and art. Varley’s coloring in particular electrifies this book.

Worthy of addition to any serious collection, be it graphic novel or literature.

Best “comic” I have ever read,January 10, 2005

It’s amazing how well this story, originally written as a 4-part mini-series in 1986, has held up. This story is responsible for the re-emergence of Batman not just as a superhero, but as a tortured anti-hero with flaws that make him no less obsessed than the supervillains he hunts. Not only do we get heaping servings of the dark, obsessed Batman, we also meet an him as an older man, a true “lion in winter” who must come to grips with his mortality and the unstoppable decline of age.

Miller allows us to use our hero to percieve the world around us, and in doing so The Dark Knight Returns also ends up as a critique of 20th century society (and 21st, for that matter). Batman is just a few public opinion points away from being considered no different than the likes of Two-Face and the Joker.

The relationships between Batman and those he hunts is simply outstanding work by Frank Miller. Generally, there are three types of villains. The first are everyday thugs that are shallow and meaningless both in dialogue and mentality. The second is a savage gang leader. Powerfully built, full of rage and singularly focused hate often seen in the young, this character forces Batman to confront his own mortality and, in an awesome final confrontation, turn to the experience of age for victory. But the most powerful relations come with Batman and his fights with the classic supervillains Two-Face and The Joker. In one really powerful scene, Batman realizes he is equally as tortured as Two-Face, but with one difference: Two-Face feels remorse and despair for what he has once again become (One panel has him actually jumping off a skyscraper, in a possible suicide attempt). He has recieved redemption from society as well as himself, but was unable to maintain it from either. In contreast, Batman, has accepted what he has become, and revels in his darkness. And then of course, there’s my favorite, The Joker. We have here an excellent portrayal of a supervillain with no conscience whatsoever, who commits evil deeds not for any agenda or flawed goal, but simply because he enjoys doing them. His ending scene with Batman is another one to remember, and I can’t imagine it happening any other way.

The supporting cast in the graphic novel are also superbly detailed. Superman is portrayed as equal parts god, innocent child, tortured soul, government flunky, dumb jock, and a lampoon of the comic industry’s idea of superheroes as flawless humans. The interesting point is, Miller creates a Superman that is not to be mocked, but understood and even sympathized with. His contrast with Batman benefits the development of both characters. Other characters, including a naive yet gifted Robin, a Gordon who is more fully fleshed-out as a cop than anything you’ll see on NYPD Blue or Law and Order, and Green Arrow, who has become the epitome of grizzled in a novel full of grizzled ornery old men.

By now, I think you can guess I kind of liked it. Frank Miller has published here a brilliant novel. If the Gods of Hollywood are truly kind, perhaps one day this will be converted into a movie. The excessive use of Batman-as-narrator increases the difficulty of writing a screenplay, but the plot is not only flawless, it is still relevant. Miller, in 1986 mind you, points out how America has a love affair with celebrities (including superheroes), public perception, a fascination with criminals, and how modern media loves to praise heroes (and successful people in general) only to aid in their entertaining downfall from public grace.

By the end of the graphic novel, with some of the most original artwork for it’s time (notice how good the story is that I didn’t even mention how it looks until now?), Miller has us realizing we have experienced a story that explains obsession, public perception, conscience, mortality, and what it truly means to be a hero better than any psychology textbook could, and I am including those textbooks with the pictures.

This is one of the true classics of the comic book world, but also an important piece of American political satire. It savages the political and cultural landscape of the eighties. This is not a child’s story, it is not a tale of heroism and absolutes, it is a work that prods the mind and astounds the senses at the same time. What more can one ask for in these days of compromise and duplicity? Nothing more than the ultimate Batman, and here you will get it.

Continuing the good times!,April 2, 2008

The Artemis Fowl train keeps on rolling as we are introduced to the demons of the fairy world. Colfer continues to come up with unique ways of looking at types of characters (like the elves and dwarves) which give a much different take than what we’ve seen in traditional fantasy literature.
My one complaint in this book is it’s very vague in explaining how Artemis and Foaly are figuring out some equation to know when demons will appear. Plus, the ending is too wide open with the time Artemis has been gone, what has happened while he’s gone, and how the elves knew when he’d return. Hopefully it will all be explained in the next book!
